Phantasy Star Online continues in the tradition of the popular series and is the first worldwide, online role-playing game for a console. The story revolves around the Pioneer Project, a plan conceived in response to the imminent destruction of the home worlds. Seven years prior, Pioneer 1 was sent to establish a colony on Planet Ragol, which included construction of the Central Dome. As Pioneer 2 is about to arrive with the main wave of refugees, a gigantic explosion shakes the entire planet, cutting off all communication with the members of Pioneer 1. Players from around the world must now unite via SegaNet to unravel the mystery.

In order to form parties, the game's People Finder option allows players to locate each other on giant servers. Once inside the Virtual Lobby, players can choose up to three other team members. Language barriers between players are broken down by a communication system featuring a universal icon system, preset phrases, and keyword translations. Players can create their own character by modifying their physical appearance and personality traits. Real-time combat features many of the original weapons and enemies from previous Phantasy Star games. Gamers can play completely online, completely offline, or a combination of the two.

Okay ladies and gents... I have a confession. I'm hooked. I'm truly addicated. I've tried counseling, I've tried exercise... Heck, I've even tried Skies of Arcadia. (Skies is a great game, don't get me wrong... a true masterpiece. Buy it now. But be sure to pick Phantasy Star up first, cuz it's simply amazing.) I'm not an avid RPG player. I love a deep storyline, but the major two problems I generally find with RPG's are that, a) the storyline is interesting, but you spend the entire game watching movies or reading pages-worth of dialogue, and b) the dialogue that there is on the screen is incredibly hokey. Grandia II, another excellent Dreamcast RPG, suffered (tho not unbearably) from the latter of these two complaints. Anyways, yes. Phantasy Star Online is a hack-and-slash game. You fight monsters, gain experience points, the whole kit-and-kaboodle. The battle system itself is not a turn-based combat system, it's a much more arcade-style (i actually find that i enjoy it much more.. imagine a Zelda-style RPG, and you've got the right picture.) But, for as sparse of a story as there is, the dialogue that there is in the game is well-written. And the gameplay more than makes up for the lack of a strong story. Trust me, you're gonna love playing this game. Also, for those of you who find yourself in need of a defined mission, there are mini-missions avaliable for play during the game. These are fun and sometimes downright silly. Sometimes these missions are tragic, as well. The diversity is well-planned by Sonic Team. The graphics are extremely sharp, wonderfully colored, and well-textured. They blew me away. The monster designs are all well-animated, and promote an outcry of "coolness!" The control is great, very easy... And the spells and weapons are lotsa fun. They're more collectable than Pokemon. ;) And then there's the online game. Which is the single most incredible online experience I've ever had. You join a party of players, from around the world, and help each other while you zap down to the planet to blast away some bad guys. You build up experience, chat, laugh, and cry. It's incredible fun, and the sense of teamwork in the midst of the sheer size of the enormous levels is INCREDIBLY fun. It's... amazing. You're gonna marvel at it. Keep your moon atomizers handy for your fallen teamates. (And for those of you who have the game, don't steal your buddy's weapons once he's died... that's totally uncool.) Have fun, guys. I hope you enjoy this game... It's truly a masterpiece. For those of you in search of more traditional-style RPG's, i highly recommend Skies of Arcadia or Grandia II, both of which are excellent. However, the advantages of gameplay and the entire online aspect within Phantasy Star Online are simply amazing. So grab your mallomars and a pillow, and blast the night away with your Saber, 'cuz it's gonna be a wild ride.
